Why Newton's method is hard for travelling waves: Small denominators, KAM theory, Arnold's linear Fourier problem, non-uniqueness, constraints and erratic failure

چکیده

Nonlinear travelling waves and standing waves can computed by discretizing the appropriate partial differential equations and then solving the resulting system of nonlinear algebraic equations. Here, we show that the “small denominator” problem of Kolmogorov– Arnold–Moser (KAM) theory is equally awkward for numerical algorithms. Furthermore, Newton’s iteration combined with continuation in a parameter often exhibits “erratic failure” even in the absence of bifurcation. Wave resonances can interlock a countable infinity of branches in an extremely complex topology, as will be illustrated through the fifth-degree Korteweg–deVries equation. Continuation can easily jump, unsuspected, from one branch to another. Constraints, sometimes finite and sometimes infinite in number, are usually needed to specify a unique solution. This confluence of numerical difficulties can be overcome only by combining the latest numerical algorithms with a strong understanding of travelling wave physics. © 2006 IMACS. Non Permanent Form Solutions in the Hamiltonian Formulation of Surface Water Waves

Using the KAM method, we exhibit some solutions of a finite dimensional approximation of the Zakharov Hamiltonian formulation of gravity water waves (Zakharov, 1968), which are spatially periodic, quasi-periodic in time, and not permanent form travelling waves. For this Hamiltonian, which is the total energy of the waves, the canonical variables are some complex quantities an and a ∗ n ( n ∈ Z)...

A modified elite ACO based avoiding premature convergence for travelling salesmen problem

The Travelling Salesmen Problem (TSP) is one of the most important and famous combinational optimization problems that aim to find the shortest tour. In this problem, the salesman starts to move from an arbitrary place called depot and after visiting all nodes, finally comes back to depot. Solving this problem seems hard because program statement is simple and leads this problem belonging to NP...

A New Method for Solving the Fully Interval Bilevel Linear Programming Problem with Equal Constraints

Most research on bilevel linear programming problem  is focused on its deterministic form, in which the coefficients and decision variables in the objective functions and constraints are assumed to be crisp. In fact, due to inaccurate information, it is difficult to know exactly values of coefficients that used to construct a bilevel model. The interval set theory is suitable for describing and...

The instability of periodic surface gravity waves

Euler’s equations describe the dynamics of gravity waves on the surface of an ideal fluid with arbitrary depth. In this paper, we discuss the stability of periodic travelling wave solutions to the full set of nonlinear equations via a non-local formulation of the water wave problem, modified from that of Ablowitz, Fokas & Musslimani (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 562, 2006, p. 313), restricted to a one-...

MILP Formulation and Genetic Algorithm for Non-permutation Flow Shop Scheduling Problem with Availability Constraints

In this paper, we consider a flow shop scheduling problem with availability constraints (FSSPAC) for the objective of minimizing the makespan. In such a problem, machines are not continuously available for processing jobs due to preventive maintenance activities. We proposed a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model for this problem which can generate non-permutation schedules. Furthermor...
